Madurai – The Temple City of India

Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu. Madurai is well known for its amazing range of Dravidian style temple architecture which is a treat for the eyes.  The temples of Madurai were built by Pandyan and Madurai Nayak kings centuries ago. Other names for Madurai include City of Junction, City of Jasmine, Temple city, City that never sleeps and City of four junctions.

The city of Madurai has huge historical importance and as per the historians the city was in existence in the 4th century BC and the name of the city has been mentioned in the ancient texts of Greeks, Romans and Arabs. Most of the temples in Madurai are centuries old and one of the most popular temple in Madurai is the Meenakshi Amman temple, which is situated in the heart of the city. The various remarkable sculptures and architecture in and around the temple makes it one of the most popular temple in India. Other major temples include Koodal Alagar Temple, Thiruparankundram, Alagar Temple and Pazhamudhir Solai.
